Lawn mowers: how to choose the best for you?

Here you can find a QUICK BUYING GUIDE for our wide range of lawn mowers, to choose the best model for you in a few simple steps. We will show you how to best use the FILTERS, to quickly and effectively select the products. Remember that you can apply multiple filters on each product.

The first two filters, BRAND and PRICE, are entirely up to you. In fact, our lawn mowers are manufactured by the best brands and there are many prices available, depending on your needs. Our lawn mowers are manufactured by reliable and high-quality brands, such as Marina Systems and Mowox.

How to choose the best lawn mower for you?

  • While puchasing a lawn mower, the first thing you need to consider is the PRODUCT LEVEL: it depends on the frequency and intensity with which you are going to use your lawn mower and select a sufficiently high level;

  • ACTIVATION: for small surfaces, you should prefer a 230V electric or battery-powered lawn mowers.

Electric lawn mowers are the smallest and most affordable on the market, suitable for small gardens, mostly because you need to connect them to a 230V power socket. Therefore, you can only use these lawn mowers in your garden. Moreover, you should pay attention that the cable does not get under the blades of the lawn mower.

Battery-powered lawn mowers combine conveniency, efficiency and working speed. Two main types of batteries: lead and lithium. The first ones are quite dated, while lithium-ion batteries are now very popular on the market. Rechargeable lithium batteries are practical and convenient. As all electric lawn mowers, these models are very popular among users seeking absolute comfort.

Unlike electric machines, battery-powered lawn mowers do not need a power cable to be connected to the current. A battery-powered lawn mower with low voltage and amperage is recommended if you possess a small garden. However, nowadays you can also find battery-powered lawn mowers for very large gardens, up to 1500 sqm.

If you need to work on large surfaces without a power cord, you may prefer a 2/4-stroke lawn mower. Engines usually provide lawn mowers with greater power than electric machines. 2/4-stroke lawn mowers come in many sizes, from small hand-push models with 40 cm blade (for 200 sqm lawns), up to heavy-duty 55 cm models for gardens up to 2500 sqm.

  • MAX. SURFACE: the most important filter since it allows you to choose a specific work surface. Our models can cover up to 3000 sqm.

A lawn mower with larger cutting deck and therefore larger cutting width is required for larger lawns. Of course, the larger the lawn, the greater the effort.

  • CUTTING WIDTH: this filter is directly linked to the previous one. It indicates the blade size and the area covered by the lawn mower.

To give you an idea, lawn mowers with blades under 40 cm are considered very small, small from 40 to 44 cm, medium from 45 to 49 cm, large over 50 cm.

  • SELF-PROPULSION: hand-push lawn mowers require more effort and are suitable for small gardens or surfaces with many obstacles. Hand push models can feature wheels on ball bearings and/or high-wheel system.

Wheels on ball bearings are ideal to easily move the lawn mower. They ensure durability and reduce fatigue. High wheels have a mainly aesthetic function; metal wheels are different.

The large galvanised metal wheel system with double sealed bearings, moisture-proof and allowing heavy-duty work also on uneven terrain. The handling provided by the high wheels ensures a long life to the lawn mower.

A self-propelled lawn mower is suitable for large surfaces without obstacles. This last category features many type of propulsion:
    - standard rear-wheel drive guarantees medium-high speed, so as to speed up the operation and reduce fatigue.
    - front-wheel drive facilitates cornering and manoeuvring, without deactivating traction, but simply by lowering the handle and raising the front wheels. However, it has less traction than conventional rear-wheel drive, as the centre of gravity of the lawn mower weight is shifted towards the rear wheels, especially when the rear collection box fills up. If you are on a slope, even a slight one, this traction is not recommended.
    - the rear-wheel drive allows to choose many speeds, for greater versatility.
    - rear-wheel drive is more professional than the speed variator and is therefore mounted on higher-end models.
    - 4WD drive (or 4×4 all-wheel drive) can be heavy-duty or amateur depending on the brand and model. However, it allows work on slopes of up to 20%.
  • POWER: often proportional to the size of the lawn mower; However, we recommend to choose higher powers for more intensive work, especially if the grass is not cut regularly. Engines are small up to 3.5 HP, medium from 4 to 5 HP, large over 6 HP.
  • ENGINE BRAND: a matter of personal taste, however, well-known engine brands are synonymous with quality, reliability and high performance. Lawn mowers with heavy-duty engines are reliable over time.

Honda engines are the most popular on the market. Briggs & Stratton produces excellent long-lasting engines, made in USA. Kawasaki means power, quality, performance and durability. Loncin engines are imported from China, very reliable and high-quality.

  • BODY MATERIAL: the machine body is the most important and expensive part of the lawn mower, together with the engine. Body types range from affordable to heavy-duty:
    - a lawn mower with ABS body is suitable for well-kept lawns without stones or obstacles on the ground.
    - a lawn mower with steel body, more expensive, is a heavy-duty product, being more resistant to shocks and providing the machine excellent durability.
    - aluminium lawn mowers, generally equipped with petrol engines and drive, are of course heavy-duty machines. The sturdy and thick die-cast aluminium body reaches heights of quality that cannot be matched by classic painted steel or ABS plastic bodies. The aluminium body is not susceptible to rust and is therefore extremely solid and durable. Surprisingly, aluminium is not only extremely robust but also really lightweight.
    - lawn mowers with stainless steel body are heavy-duty lawn mowers, featuring the strongest and most durable body by far, even compared to aluminium. In fact, stainless steel is in fact the best of the noble metals for its robustness and lightness. Moreover, this type of body makes these heavy-duty lawn mowers resistant to oxidation and shocks.
  • CUTTING SYSTEMS: this filter selects the lawn mowers suitable for your green area depending on their cutting system.

In fact, a lawn mower can be used to cut grass in gardens, parks and flowerbeds, in all places where there is a well-kept, not excessively tall lawn, well levelled and without obstacles or stones. Three cutting modes available:
    - collection box
    - mulching
    - side discharge

The lawn mower can feature one or all systems. Lawn mowers with collection box - the simplest and easiest to use - are perfect to obtain quick results, if you do not want to leave the cut grass on your lawn.

If you do not have such need, you can choose a lawn mower with side discharge, ideal for medium/large spaces, suitable for weeds taller than the average, since the side deflector can easily discharge them.

Mulching lawn mowers are becoming increasingly more important. Often, these lawn mowers are heavy-duty products and they feature a robust steel body, specifically designed and built for mulching.

The cutting system of 2/4-stroke mulching lawn mowers allows to shred grass and spread it evenly on the cutting surface. The cut grass remains suspended for a longer period of time inside the lawn mower housing, falling over and over again onto the blades and being lifted up again each time. This technology guarantees better cutting compared to that obtained with standard blades.

These grass particles do not remain on the surface of the turf, but are deposited directly in contact with the soil, decomposing in a short time. They will then transform into nutrients and water, acting like a fertiliser.
