They can have a supporting frame, i.e. small steel tubes that are fixed to the ground and support the outer tank, usually made of PVC, or they can be inflatable, i.e. with inflatable edges that allow the pool to support itself once filled with water.
- Dimensions: The choice of dimensions must first be assessed based on the available space. The dimensions are standard and fixed, ranging from 2x3 metres for the smallest models to 14x7 metres.
- Shape: Closely linked to size, the various shapes are also an important choice to consider depending on the space available.
- Filter pump: Filter pumps are important accessories for keeping the pool water clean and clear throughout the period of use.
- Included accessories: Check which accessories are included in the package. Having a pool complete with all the necessary accessories can save you time and money.
- Installation and support: Check whether the seller offers installation or after-sales support services. This can be particularly useful for more complex pools such as rigid pools or spas.
- Sustainability and materials: Consider the environmental impact of the materials used for the pool and choose more sustainable options if available.

The liner is a waterproof membrane used to line the inside of above-ground pools, ensuring watertightness and improving the aesthetics of the pool. In other words, the liner prevents water leakage, ensuring that the pool remains full and usable.
Common materials for liners:
- PVC (polyvinyl chloride): PVC is one of the most common materials for liners, thanks to its durability and resistance to chemicals. It adapts easily to the shape of the pool, ensuring uniform coverage. Available in various thicknesses (usually between 0.2 mm and 0.85 mm), with thicker ones offering greater strength and durability.
- Polyethylene: Polyethylene is a lightweight and resistant material, mainly used for inflatable and tubular pools. Easy to work with, it allows for quick installation and removal.
- EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate): This material offers greater elasticity, making it resistant to deformation. It has a softer surface, improving comfort when using the pool.
- Polyurethane: High mechanical strength and abrasion resistance, ideal for pools that undergo intensive use. Good insulating properties that help maintain water temperature.
7. How to choose the right size for a backyard pool?
Choosing the right size for an above-ground backyars pool requires evaluating various factors, including available space, intended use and budget.
- Available space: Before purchasing, measure the available area in your garden or yard to ensure there is enough space not only for the pool but also for access and maintenance. Leave at least 1-2 metres of free space around the pool for easy access and safety.
- Intended use: Consider how many people will be using the pool at the same time. Larger pools are ideal for large families or those who enjoy entertaining friends. If you plan to use the pool for swimming, choose a pool that is at least 7-8 metres long. For recreational activities and games, a smaller pool may be sufficient.
- Depth: If there are small children, opt for a pool with a maximum depth of 1-1.2 metres. For adults and experienced swimmers, a depth of 1.5 metres or more may be more suitable.
- Pool shape: Depending on the space you have available and how you intend to use it, especially if you plan to swim in confined spaces or use it mainly for relaxation, choose between rectangular, round or oval pools.
- Budget: Larger and deeper pools tend to have a higher initial cost. Also consider the costs of maintenance, heating and water treatment, which increase with the size of the pool.
8. What permits are required to install an above-ground pool? When does a pool need to be declared?
Above-ground pools are the only type that do not require municipal authorisation. This is true in theory, but in practice it depends on the type and composition of the kit chosen.
Semi-inground pools that are easy to dismantle and prefabricated pools, mainly made of fibreglass and attached to the property, also do not require any permits.
However, if the volume of the pool exceeds 20% of that of the main building, then it is mandatory to apply for a building permit. This is also true in cases where technical regulations consider appurtenant works as 'new construction works', perhaps due to the particular environmental value of the area.
In any case, it is always advisable to check with the relevant municipal offices to avoid unpleasant situations.
9. How do you clean a swimming pool? How do you keep the water clear in a backyard or outdoor swimming pool?
Cleaning a swimming pool is essential to keep the water clear and safe for swimmers. Here are the main steps for effective cleaning:
- Surface cleaning: Use a net to remove leaves, insects and other debris floating on the surface of the water. Do this daily to prevent dirt from accumulating.
- Brushing the walls: Use a pool brush to clean the walls and bottom of the pool, removing algae and dirt deposits. Brush the walls at least once a week to keep the surfaces clean.
- Suction on the bottom: Use a manual vacuum cleaner or a robot cleaner to perform suction on the bottom of the pool, removing sand, gravel and other debris. Perform suction on the bottom of the pool at least once a week or more often if necessary.
- Filtration system: Check and clean the pool filter regularly to ensure it is working properly. Backwash the sand filter at least once every two weeks to remove accumulated debris.
- Chemical balance: Use a kit to test the pH, chlorine and alkalinity levels of the water. The pH should be between 7.4 and 7.6, while the chlorine level should be between 1 and 3 ppm. Maintain alkalinity between 80 and 120 ppm to stabilise the pH. Add the necessary chemicals to maintain water balance, including chlorine, algaecides and pH correctors.
- Additional treatments: Perform a weekly shock treatment with high-concentration chlorine to eliminate resistant bacteria and algae. Use flocculants to aggregate suspended particles, facilitating their removal through the filter.
